Prophecy—Key to the Future
The original draft of this book was a master’s thesis written by Duane S. Crowther. It was submitted, reviewed and accepted by some of the best-prepared scriptural scholars in the Department of Scripture in the College of Religious Instruction, Brigham Young University. The study was limited to scriptural passages and to interpretive prophecies and comments by General Authorities of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
In preparing the thesis, the author strived to meet three objectives:
- to present the events in correct chronological order;
- to provide an understandable and well-documented discussion of each of the prophesied events which are to come upon the earth; and
- to compile a great deal of material which had been inaccessible to the average Latter-day Saint reader.
In the process, he assembled all the key prophecies concerning last-days events found in the Old and New Testaments, the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price: a thorough and remarkable accomplishment. He was well aware of the Apostle Paul’s instruction to “Covet earnestly the best gifts,…but rather that ye prophesied.” (1 Corinthians 12:31, 14:1)
Last Days Events
Many of the quoted prophecies speak of “happy events” so the book certainly isn’t a “gloom and doom” book. But many of the cited prophecies are warnings. For instance, one of the last prophecies made by the Savior before hung on the cross was: “nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. All these are the beginning of sorrows. (Matthew 24:7-8).
Knowledge of the “signs of the times” is a valuable spiritual gift. It was conferred to brethren in the early days of the restoration and has been a blessing passed on to others down through the years: “unto you it shall be given to know the signs of the times, and the signs of the coming of the Son of Man.” (D&C 68:11)
And that knowledge can be an anchor of faith as “unhappy events” take place in these last days. As another revelation recorded in the Doctrine and Covenants says, “treasure up wisdom in your bosoms, lest the wickedness of men reveal these things unto you by their wickedness, in a manner which shall speak in your ears with a voice louder than that which shall shake the earth; but if ye are prepared ye shall not fear.” (D&C 38:30-31)
From the earliest days of its publication, it is acknowledged to be the most comprehensive book on future latter-day events in Later-day Saint literature. That remains to this day.
